Nikki Poulos’ designs are colourful, whimsical and absolutely gorgeous! We asked Nikki about her love of fashion and where she finds her inspiration ahead of her TVSN Fashion Week shows!
Nikki, what is your favourite colour?
My favorite colors are warm tones — fuchsias, reds, oranges and all the combinations in between. I generally include one or more of these colours in each collection. I don’t follow seasonal colour trends, so I love to show bright colours in winter too. I don’t wear much black actually, only as an accent, so I only include black in my collections for those customers who love my silhouettes and fabrics but are a little print shy.
Where does your love of fashion and design stem from?
I grew up in the Australian Outback on a 54,000 acre cattle farm with no electricity. And no television. My mother was very creative; our home was very retro; wallpapered with big bold graphic prints and painted in bright colors. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. You can see my mother’s design aesthetic in my work.
Take us through your design process – where does your inspiration come from? How do you picture ladies wearing your clothes?
As a kid growing up on the farm, I became a voracious reader and dreamt of places far away and exotic, imagining a life I would have once I was old enough to travel. Now I live that fantasy, traveling and seeking inspiration everywhere I go. I try to remember the feelings I get from people and places, images, words, music and art. I don’t take many photos, as I prefer to take a mental picture and be inspired by my emotional responses to stimulus.
How many designs do you work on at a time? How long does it take you to put together a collection?
I work on multiple collections at once. Because the ‘nikki poulos’ collections are print driven, I am always kind of working, always switched on, keeping my eyes peeled for print inspiration. I have inspiration files that I keep adding to and then I merchandise the prints per collection from there. This past year was pretty hectic; I designed 9 collections from ready-to-wear that you see on TVSN, a resort collection and a swim ‘n surf collection.
Who is your dream celebrity to style?
I don’t have a dream celebrity per se that I’d like to dress. My designs are really about me, and what I’d like to wear each season. I feel pretty honored that so many women tune in to the teleshopping shows. The viewers are the real celebrities, in my opinion!
Do you have any fashion tips and tricks you can share?
My best fashion tips are pretty simple really…. If you feel good in something then you’ll radiate awesomeness. That’s the key. And lots of jewelery. I love layering vintage gold jewelry. Gold is glam in my book!
What are your fashion faux pas?
A fashion faux pas would be to admit I have fashion faux pas… Not really (wink wink) but I stand by most of my fashion decisions. Again if it feels good…
What has been your favourite memory/moment in your career so far?
I have to say the most memorable and defining moment for me was when Fashion Star aired. My clothes were so well received that they sold out in minutes, crashing H&M’s website in 2 minutes due to the high volume of people trying to buy my designs. That, I have to say, was pretty damn cool.
What do you love about TVSN?
I love TVSN for a number of reasons but mostly because TVSN gives me the opportunity to come back to Australia (I live in new York). It’s such fun to shoot the live shows, you know anything can happen, and often it does! It’s super cool to share each new collection with the viewers. It’s so wonderful and gratifying when viewers call in and we get to chat as if we are in our living rooms having girl talk.
What do you love about travelling back to Australia?
I love coming home to get my fix of Australia; have a swim and surf in the ocean, eat a meat pie (it’s one of the first things I do when I come home), and see my friends and family. Aussies throw the best BBQs and I get to enjoy lots of those each trip.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Where do I see myself in 10 years? That’s a long way away (laughter)… I’m pretty sure I’ll still be designing. I’d like to expand my teleshopping further around the globe. I took up surfing about two years ago and I’ve really enjoyed designing and “testing” the surf gear. Hopefully I can keep growing the surf business. I see the “nikki” brand branching out into other areas such as homewares. I’d like to be spending more time in Australia. As I get older I realize how much I miss my friends and family and my home. Life is short. I don’t want to miss a trick.
